MAYOR MICHAEL R. BLOOMBERG ON INCREASE IN NEW YORK CITY POPULATION TO RECORD 8.36 MILLION PEOPLE

“New York City continues to attract people from around the country and around world because it offers opportunities not found anyplace else. That our population has reached an all-time high is great news for the City, especially in this economic downturn. A growing population is one of the best defenses against housing abandonment and economic decline, and our growth is thanks to all the hard-working New Yorkers who are improving our schools, cleaning our streets, maintaining our parks and keeping us safe.”

As of July 1, 2008, according to the U.S. Census Bureau, the population of the City of New York was at a new all-time high of 8,363,710. This represents a one year increase of more than 53,000 people, and a cumulative increase of more than 355,000 or 4.4 percent since April 2000. All five boroughs continue to see an increase in population, with the largest numerical increase from July 2007 to July 2008 occurring in Brooklyn and the largest percentage increase occurring in Staten Island. The City is on target to reach the population projections for 2010 outlined through PlaNYC.
